Three Things

The day was still bad. Nina just noticed it had not been entirely against her.

By the end of the day, Nina had decided that everything was terrible. Her alarm went off too early. Her coffee spilled. Her manager sent a message with only one sentence and no punctuation, which obviously meant she was about to lose her job. Then her internet stopped working during a meeting.

By six o’clock, Nina was ready to move to another city and become someone who made pottery near the ocean. Before bed, she opened her phone and saw a note she had written weeks earlier. Three things that made today easier. She almost skipped it.

Then she wrote: The neighbor held the elevator. My sister sent a ridiculous video. The dog next door wagged at me like I was famous.

None of those things fixed her day. Her problems were still there. The meeting still happened. The coffee was still on her shirt. But for a few seconds, Nina noticed that the day had not been entirely against her.

Gratitude did not make everything perfect. It simply reminded her that difficult days can still contain small mercies. Sometimes that is enough to help you try again tomorrow.
